There are two monsters in this heartbreaking and gripping story, but they are not Eric (Cooper Koch) and Lyle (Nicolas Alexander Chavez), but Jose (Javier Bardem) and Kitty (Chloe Savini).

I don’t want to go into the legal aspects of the case because this is not a documentary but a drama series. However, let me start by saying that if Eric and Lyle were Erica and Lyle – their two daughters – they wouldn’t spend a day in jail. This is not to say that Eric and Lyle were innocent, but the mitigating circumstances were so overwhelming and compelling that they should have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter. Then there’s Dominic Dunne (Nathan Lane), a bad guy.
He was a sort of pure Truman Capote
I want to highlight episode 5, The Hurt Man. There are only two characters in the entire scene: Leslie Abramson (Ari Gainer) and Eric. Director Michael Uppendahl places the camera about 12 feet from the table where the two are sitting. Abramson has his back to the camera (we never see his face) and Lyle is facing.
Nicholas Chavez is also fantastic as Lyle
Slowly, imperceptibly, the camera pans to Eric as he walks past Abramson, ending with a close-up of Eric explaining the episode’s title. Well done! Cooper Koch does a great job all the time, but especially in this episode. Javier Bardem and Chloe Savini are outstanding as Jose and Kitty.
