Surely they just develop the characters and set a unique tone
Spies, London, Kira, Ben, quality cinematography, beautiful soundtrack – what could possibly go wrong? And I already know this is my favorite genre and will overlook any flaws that arise. But when the dialogue in episode 1 was slow, some moments dragged on and scenes with Quinten-style attempts at dialogue flattened me, I tried to console myself.
I was wrong
As the episodes dragged on, I realized this series just doesn’t deliver. Not just discord, but with some characters I actually cared about. I honestly don’t know how the magic happens, but Slow Horses, The Americans, Le Bureau, the Diplomat, and The Old Man — for all their flaws — I found myself deeply engaged with the stories and characters.
I feel sorry for what could have been
Add to that the lack of background information and the many omissions, and the irritating:curiosity ratio was too high to be enjoyable. Yes, all the basic elements of espionage are here in Black Doves, but somehow there was no salt in the recipe and by E03 I was already racing.
