Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East in Heretic, as well as more modern women killing it in the horror game
Chronology
Two young religious women are drawn into a cat and mouse game in the home of a strange man. The music in the end credits is a version of “Knocking on Heavens Door” to the tune of Mazzy Star’s “Fade into You.” A reference to the fact that Radiohead’s “Creep” is a reprise (for its melody) of The Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe,” previously mentioned by Grant in the film.
Heretic is as unpredictable as it is chaotic
The end credits note that Generative Al was not used in the making of the film. Featured in Film Reviews: Heretic | Best Christmas Show Ever (2024).
Hugh Grant gives a great performance, and Sophie Thatcher and Cloe East also shine in their roles
While the film is suspenseful for most of its running time, the plot begins to falter in the final act. The director, cinematographer, and production designer also deserve credit for gradually immersing the viewer in the growing madness of Grant’s character and his eerie home.
Unfortunately, the plot is the weakest point of the film
The tension and mystery build beautifully at the beginning, but about two-thirds of the way through the film, they start to fall apart. The climax left me a bit disappointed, as I was expecting something deeper.
